The Technology, Media and Telecommunications team at KO Associates shall be attending the Thought leaders/Working group meeting on Internet Shutdowns in Africa organized by the Kenya ICT Action Network (KICTANET). The meeting is timely as Kenya heads to elections in August 2017 where two broad concerns about the Internet have surfaced. One is the use of the Internet to spread hate speech online and the other is use of the Internet to manipulate media thereby mobilizing voters in some areas and suppressing them in others. This meeting is intended to be a mode of shedding light on the potential policy concerns that may arise as a result of an internet shutdown during moments of political agitation.
